Target and Wal-Mart Buying Out More Zellers Leases

The Canadian brand Zellers is being largely absorbed by two American firms, Target Corporation and Wal-Mart Canada. Target now owns 189 of the Zeller leases in Canada. By the time the firm is finished, it will have paid $1.825 billion to eventually have 220 sites rebranded as part of the Target family.

Most of these sites will be revamped and become Target Stores by 2013. Target then proceeded to transfer 39 leases to Wal-Mart which will also re-open the sites under their brand name. In Edmonton, there are a number of Zellers that will soon become Wal-Mart’s. These include locations at Meadowlark Shopping Centre, Abbottsfield Shopper Mall, South Park Centre, Westmount Shopping Centre and Northgate Centre. The new stores will be of the superstore variety which offers groceries as well as the general merchandise the chain is known for.

The branches in Edmonton that will be under the Target banner will open in 2013. These include Sherwood Park Mall, St Albert Centre, Mill Woods Town, Kingsway Mall and Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre. Added to that list recently was a new branch in West Edmonton Mall with a planned spring of 2013 opening. Until that time, the stores will continue to operate under the Zellers banner.
